And then - Mondo Bongo Tour '81 (Canada)

Boomtown Rat Out of Cage

The lead singer of the Boomtown Rats was caged briefly yesterday afternoon for allegedly bringing a restricted weapon into Canada.

Bob Geldof was in town for a Saturday night concert at the Seneca College fieldhouse and is slated to play there again tonight.

Geldof was arrested by RCMP officers, who said they found a set of nanchukta sticks in his baggage (Nanchukta sticks are two heavy pieces of wood held together by a short length of chain that can be swung and used as a mace.)

After his arrest, Geldof was turned over to Peel Regional Officers. Police said they decided to release him when Geldof told them he didn't know the sticks were restricted weapons here. They said he will not get the sticks back when he leaves Canada.

"We took into account that he was in the band, whatever its name is, and that he was from Ireland. He says he didn't know the things are prohibited," a Peel cop said.

The new wave band, one of the biggest in Britain, has already been in trouble in North America because of the theme of their song I Don't Like Mondays.

The song refers to the comments made last October by Brenda Spencer, the 17-year-old San Diego girl who shot at a school, killing two men and wounding eight children last October.
