UNIVERSITY HONOURS

VICE-PRINCIPAL Professor David Swinfen bade a formal farewell to at this year’s fourth and final graduation ceremony in the yesterday afternoon.

An honorary degree was conferred on Sir Bob Geldof at Caird Hall, Dundee University.

Sir Bob first found fame as a member of the Boomtown Rats. However, he came to wider prominence in 1985 when he organised Live Aid to raise money for famine relief in Africa.

He enlisted a host of famous musicians to record Do They Know It’s Christmas as part of the Band Aid campaign.

He later received an honorary knighthood for his charitable work.

Asked about his honour yesterday, he said, "I wish my old man was here."

Sir Bob explained that he had never achieved anything at school and was glad to get a "backhanded" degree.
