And
Now - Exclusive Interview (Part One)
Bob
Loveday (Vince Lovepump)
A
visitor to this site is none other than Bob Loveday, a long serving member
of Bob Geldof's Happy Club band. Bob (Vince) very kindly agreed to answer
some questions.
CHRIS:
Why are you called Vince Lovepump ?
BOB LOVEDAY:
1.
It was decreed that there could be no more than one BOB in the
band.
2. "Loveday" sounds like it belongs in Folk Music, allegedly...
3. It seems two young ladies were overheard discussing salaciously intimate
anecdotes at a breakfast buffet, after which time the name refused to
come unstuck. Its all bollox if you ask me, and anyway, I was asleep at
the time.
CHRIS: What do you do when you're not playing with BG ?
BOB LOVEDAY: Play with other people, or if no-ones about, myself
(It's amazing what you can get away with using modern recording gadgets.)
Sometimes I get called to do bits of TV and film music.
From time to time Im summoned to do a recording with Van M at very
short notice. But usually Im not.
Recently I started a "secular" ( non-musical) business, which
promotes anti-ageing products and advice. Its a fascinating and
fast-developing area, and I hope to be 25 by summer 2003.
CHRIS:
What's your favourite song to play live ?
BOB LOVEDAY: Its gotta be Hippy Angel!. Oh no,
we dont do that any more
guess its between One
for Me and Rat Trap.
CHRIS: When did you first learn to play an instrument ?
BOB LOVEDAY: When I was just thwee, my mummy decided to teach me
the piano, everybody thought it was THO thweet
CHRIS:
Do you have to rehearse much with the rest of the band ?
BOB LOVEDAY: Have to come back to you on that one, lemme find that
dictionary
CHRIS: What music do you like to listen to ?
BOB
LOVEDAY: Quite honestly, almost any style you like. If
its got great writing & its played like they mean it,
Im there. Great to hear new sounds & cross-influences emerging,
eg recently Ive been enjoying newish instrumental stuff with Arabic/north
African melodies alongside big cool drum & bass loops.
The vibe is everything. Maybe it comes from my stint with Penguin Café
Orchestra, Ive grown to love Musics ability to Mesmerize.
To Mesmeresmeresmeresmeresmerize
CHRIS: How did you get into comedy ?
BOB LOVEDAY: I was gagging for it, then eventually had the deep
joy of working with composers like Simon Brint, Philip Pope and Rory McGrath
at various times, which led to odd excursions with some of those great
TV comedy folk..
Phil and Rorys little-known video release An Evening with
Death By Country (now probably deleted) has got to be the funniest
thing Ive done.
CHRIS: Do you support a football team ?
BOB
LOVEDAY: No.
Part
Two will follow at a later date.
